The IMSA SportsCar Championship, currently known as the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship under sponsorship, is a sports car racing series based in the United States and Canada and organized by the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA). It is considered the pinnacle of sports car racing in North America, attracting top-tier manufacturers, teams, and drivers. The championship features prototypes and GT cars competing in long-distance endurance and shorter sprint races across various classes.

The GTP class in IMSA represents the top tier of endurance racing, featuring hybrid prototype cars designed for maximum performance. These vehicles combine cutting-edge technology, including electric and combustion powertrains, to deliver exceptional speed and efficiency. The GTP class showcases manufacturers like Acura, BMW, and Porsche, competing in premier events such as the Rolex 24 at Daytona and Petit Le Mans. With the introduction of hybrid systems, the GTP class emphasizes speed and sustainability in modern motorsports.
#23 ASTON MARTIN THOR TEAM

The Le Mans Prototype (LMP) class in IMSA features purpose-built race cars designed for high-speed endurance racing, emphasizing advanced aerodynamics, performance, and efficiency. These cars are driven by a mix of professional drivers and, in some cases, amateur drivers, with teams often fielding a combination of both. The class showcases the pinnacle of motorsport innovation and speed, continually pushing the boundaries of automotive engineering.
#52 PR1 MATHIASEN MOTORSPORTS

The GTD Pro class in IMSA features high-performance, production-based race cars driven by professional gold-level drivers. Competing in events like the Rolex 24 at Daytona and Petit Le Mans, manufacturers such as Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Mercedes-Benz participate. The class combines elite racing with a focus on speed, strategy, and driver skill. The Balance of Performance (BoP) system ensures competitive equality across different manufacturers.
#77 AO RACING

The GTD class in IMSA features production-based race cars driven by both professional and amateur drivers. The class emphasizes speed, durability, and strategy, with the Balance of Performance (BoP) system ensuring fairness across all entries. GTD provides exciting, competitive racing at a more accessible level than the top-tier classes.

GTP cars are the most advanced prototypes on the grid. They feature sleek, futuristic designs and hybrid powertrains from manufacturers like Acura, Porsche, Cadillac, and BMW. You can identify them by their low, aggressive stance and black-and-white LED number panels on the doors.

LMP2 cars also look like prototypes but are slightly less advanced and do not use hybrid systems. They all share the same ORECA chassis and are run by privateer teams. Look for their simpler bodywork compared to GTP and their distinctive blue LED number panels.

GTD PRO cars are based on production GT3 models like the Corvette, Porsche 911, or Lexus RC F. These cars are fielded by factory-backed teams with all-pro driver lineups. They look like race versions of road cars and use red LED number panels.

GTD cars are nearly identical to GTD PRO in appearance, also built to GT3 specs, but usually feature amateur or semi-pro drivers and are operated by private teams. The best way to tell them apart is by their green LED number panels.
