The IMSA VP Racing SportsCar Challenge is a North American sprint racing series sanctioned by the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA). Launched in 2023 as a successor to the IMSA Prototype Challenge, it is a developmental platform for drivers and teams aiming to advance within the IMSA ranks. The series features single-driver races with no driver changes and includes three distinct classes: LMP3 prototype cars, GTDX (GT3-spec) cars, and GSX (GT4-spec) cars. Often held as support events for the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, the VP Racing SportsCar Challenge delivers fast-paced, competitive racing while helping cultivate the next generation of sports car talent.

The P3 class features purpose-built, closed-cockpit prototype race cars by manufacturers like Ligier, Duqueine, and Ginetta. Powered by spec V8 engines and built to entry-level prototype standards, these lightweight cars deliver high-downforce handling and are the fastest class in the VP Challenge. P3 is an ideal launching pad for drivers aiming to advance into IMSA’s top prototype categories like LMP2 and GTP.

Introduced in 2025, the GTDX class brings FIA GT3-spec race cars—such as Porsche 911 GT3 R, BMW M4 GT3, Ferrari 296 GT3, and Mercedes-AMG GT3—to the VP Challenge field. These powerful machines run 500 hp and exceed 170 mph, with a Balance of Performance (BoP) derived from WeatherTech’s GTD class rules and featuring race-specific success ballast. GTDX offers a valuable opportunity to gain real GT3 race experience without jumping directly into the full-sized WeatherTech series.

The GSX class features GT4-spec cars homologated under SRO rules, including models like the BMW M4 GT4, Toyota GR Supra GT4, Porsche 718 GT4, and Aston Martin Vantage GT4. These cars produce around 400–450 hp and top out above 160 mph, balanced via fuel capacity, ride heights, and weight adjustments. GSX is perfect for drivers familiar with GT4 machinery, offering a sprint race experience with no pit stops and a single driver format.
