The Michelin Pilot Challenge is one of IMSA’s most exciting support series, featuring production-based race cars closely related to the ones you see on the street. The series has two classes—Grand Sport (GS) and Touring Car (TCR)—with cars from brands like BMW, Audi, Hyundai, and Aston Martin. Races are typically two hours long and include driver changes, pit stops, and strategy, making them action-packed and unpredictable. It’s a key step in IMSA’s racing ladder and a popular series for experienced racers and up-and-coming talent.

The Grand Sport (GS) class features high-performance race cars based on powerful street models, often with rear-wheel drive and big engines. The Cars in this class include models like the BMW M4 GT4, Aston Martin Vantage GT4, Ford Mustang GT4, and Porsche 718 Cayman GT4. They follow GT4 regulations worldwide, meaning close competition and balanced performance across different car types. GS cars are fast, loud, and exciting, making this class the top tier of the Michelin Pilot Challenge.

The Touring Car (TCR) class comprises front-wheel-drive race cars that are lighter and slightly less powerful than GS cars, but still built for serious competition. These cars are based on compact models like the Hyundai Elantra N TCR, Audi RS3 LMS, and Honda Civic Type R TCR. The TCR class is known for tight racing, frequent position changes, and a focus on driver skill and teamwork. It’s a favorite for fans and a great place for drivers looking to prove themselves in professional touring car racing.

The Michelin Pilot Challenge shares many key elements with the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, making it a natural stepping stone for drivers and teams. Both series race on the same iconic tracks—like Daytona, Sebring, and Road America—and often on the same weekends, giving Pilot drivers a taste of the big stage. The race formats include pit stops, driver changes, and multi-class traffic, like in WeatherTech, helping build the skills needed at the next level. Cars in the Grand Sport (GS) class follow global GT4 rules, while many TCR teams also run GTD or LMP programs in WeatherTech, creating a direct path forward. With similar team structures, strategies, and race intensity, the Michelin Pilot Challenge is not just a proving ground—it’s the launchpad for future WeatherTech talent.
