The Mustang Challenge is a single-make racing series built around the all-new Ford Mustang Dark Horse R, designed to offer high-level, competitive racing in a tightly controlled, one-make format. Sanctioned by IMSA and launched in 2024, the series gives drivers a professional platform to develop their skills in equal machinery, ensuring the focus stays on driver talent. All cars are built to the exact specifications and use a 500+ horsepower 5.0-liter V8 engine, race-tuned suspension, and Michelin racing slicks. The action is fast and intense with sprint races and no pit stops. The Mustang Challenge runs alongside major IMSA weekends, exposing drivers to top teams, fans, and career-building opportunities in sports car racing.

The DH class is the main professional category in the Mustang Challenge, open to all drivers competing in the full-performance Ford Mustang Dark Horse R race car. These cars are identical specs, featuring a 5.0-liter V8, race-prepped chassis, and Michelin slick tires. This class is where the top drivers battle it out for the overall championship, with prize money and opportunities to move up into other IMSA series on the line. It's designed for serious racers looking to prove themselves in a high-profile, single-make environment.

The DHL class is a subcategory within the series, created specifically for drivers aged 45 and older. It uses the identical Mustang Dark Horse R as the Dark Horse class, but gives gentleman racers a chance to compete against their peers while still racing on the same track and under the same conditions. The DHL class helps bring more diversity to the field and recognizes the achievements of veteran drivers in a competitive, respectful environment.

These Dark Horse cars can be easily identified by their red number background on the race car, setting them apart from other classes.

The Dark Horse Legends are identified by their blue number background found on the side of the car.

The IMSA Mustang Challenge brings single-make racing to the next level with the Ford Mustang Dark Horse R — a purpose-built race car developed by Ford Performance and Multimatic Motorsports. Powered by a 5.0-liter Coyote V8 producing over 500 horsepower and paired with a six-speed manual gearbox, the Dark Horse R delivers a pure, driver-focused experience. Adjustable suspension and DSSV Multimatic dampers allow teams to fine-tune performance, while ABS enhances control under braking. As a one-make series, every competitor races the same machinery, placing the focus squarely on driver talent. With IMSA sanctioning and a format that includes practice, qualifying, and sprint races, the Mustang Challenge offers a professional platform for development within the IMSA ladder.
